“State of Jazz” Discussion Panel Opens Atlanta Jazz Festival Shedding Light on the Local Jazz Scene

Atlanta, Georgia, May 15, 2008 – Sentinel Media joins forces with WCLK - 91.9FM, Atlanta Jazz Festival BestofAtlantaConcerts.com and Georgia State University Jazz Program to bring the “State of Jazz” discussion panel Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 60 Luckie Street the Georgia State University Helen M. Aderhold Learning Center from 1:00pm to 2:30pm to highlight some of the local and national trends that are shaping the Atlanta jazz scene. The event will be filmed as a part of a feature length jazz documentary project entitled “Jazz Is…”, chronicling the Atlanta jazz scene from the 60’s to the present with the movie trailer being premiered during the event.
The “State of Jazz” discussion panel brings together a group of respected jazz musicians, educators, promoters and the media in the Atlanta jazz scene to discuss the issues driving the scene now and in the future. “Jazz and live music is on and popping in the ATL” says Atlanta-based jazz violinist Ken Ford. The panel includes notables such as Joey Sommerville Atlanta-based trumpeter, Sonny Emory drummer formally with Earth Wind and Fire, Neal Starkey legendary bassist who has recorded with Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard, Jose Garcia pianist for International Groove Conspiracy and others. This event happens across the street from Woodruff Park in the backdrop of the 2008 Atlanta Jazz Festival as the format has been changed to feature the performances of local jazz artist during this year’s three day event. The information presented in “State of Jazz” discussion panel will be filmed and documented for the upcoming feature length jazz documentary, “Jazz Is…”.
The “State of Jazz” discussion panel event will also premier the “Jazz Is…” movie trailer. The trailer features some of Atlanta’s most notable musicians and personalities in the Atlanta jazz scene over the past thirty years. Appearances include jazz violinist Ken Ford, WCLK 91.9 deejay Carl Anthony, Grammy nominated jazz trumpeter Russell Gunn, Future of Jazz founder Tammy Allen Pascal’s owner George Pascal, legendary jazz educator and musician over Clark Atlanta University jazz program James Patterson and others. Filming for the “Jazz Is…” documentary is scheduled through 2008 with the official release scheduled for February 2009.
